The Meaning of ... Color

93% of consumer purchases are made based on visual appearance or color. That's why the color scheme for your brand is one of the most essential pieces of your identity package. Research shows that color preferences are influenced by personality, culture, and context. While the color red has been shown to get attention, blue is one of the most popular choices for corporate logos. It is often associated with depth and stability, symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, and truth. It is also considered beneficial to the mind and body, slow human metabolism and produce a calming effect. But what color should you choose to compliment blue? Brown and blue together represent stability, loyalty, trust, community, longevity, wisdom, prestige, wealth and honor. Colors are most effective when the customer believes they fit the company brand. Choosing pink and purple for a law firm's logo might not be the best choice. But what about for an OB/GYN office? If the mission, vision, and customer experience match the feelings and emotions the color invokes you have a winning combination. Here are four tips to consider regarding color:
  1. Two is all you need! It’s best to choose two main colors for your brand.
  2. Be consistent! - Utilize your brand colors on both digital and print materials, so customers can associate those colors with your brand.
  3. Add a POP of color! Pick a color complementary to the others in your brand that you can use occasionally to really make something pop.
  4. Make it easy on yourself! Create a stylesheet that includes your Pantone, CMYK, RGB, and Hex#’s for quick reference and to ensure color matching and proper color management.
Number four on the list is key as colors can vary widely in appearance when you switch color systems. Colors will look different on a monitor or digital device vs. printed material. From a printing standpoint, it’s best to export your piece to match how it will be printed. Properly preparing your files can make a world of difference in the final product.
