Yard Signs in Raleigh FAQ

Yard signs are everywhere—from promoting local politicians to informing the community about the upcoming bake sale, yard signs are a cost-effective way of getting your message out to as many people as possible.

A yard sign is easy to install, durable and can last a very long time with proper care. Read on to learn more about the humble yard sign and how it can help you achieve your goals.

How to Install a Yard Sign in Raleigh

Contrary to what’s shown in the movies or cartoons, there’s a specific way you’ll need to install your new yard sign from AlphaGraphics of Raleigh.
  1. Locate an area where the sign can stand up on its own. Look for ground that is soft enough to drive the stakes deep enough. Avoid trying to install a yard sign into extremely tough soil—you’ll only wind up damaging the metal stakes.
  2. Take the wire stakes and firmly push them into the ground. If you’re unable to do it by hand, take a mallet and gently hammer it down. Keep in mind that the metal stakes are pretty thin, and if you apply too much force, you could bend them.
  3. Once the stakes are firmly in the ground, slide the yard sign over it.
If you don’t have plans to use a wire stake and instead prefer to mount it on a metal pole or fence, refer to the installation instructions for the correct type of nuts and bolts to ensure it’s mounted securely.

Raleigh Yard Sign Rules and Regulations

School Board SignLike all cities in the U.S., Raleigh has a few rules and regulations for displaying outdoor signage. If you’re still unclear after reading the above rules, give the signage experts at AlphaGraphics of Downtown Raleigh a call—we’ll let you know what the city will and won’t allow. It’s also important to keep in mind that even if the city does allow a sign, the property owners might not. For example, there are many homeowners associations (HOA) that govern condo/apartment and residential neighborhoods—and who might have a bylaw or two on the books that deal with the placement of yard signs on their property. Bottom line: It’s better to be safe than sorry when attempting to install a yard sign on public or private property. Ask around and get written permission first.

How to Protect a Raleigh Yard Sign?

The only downside to a yard sign is that they’re a prime target for vandalization in some instances. There are several hot-button topics nowadays, such as politics and vaccinations.  While defacing or vandalizing a sign is technically illegal, don’t expect the local gendarmes to track them down. Jealous business competitors can also remove, rip up, or damage your sign. Here are a few ways that you can help protect your signage and mitigate any potential damage:
  • Ensure that you install your sign in an area with adequate nighttime lighting.
  • If you can, try to install it in an area near a CCTV cam or doorbell camera.
  • Anti-graffiti laminate or paint could help prevent someone from defacing your sign with a permanent paint marker.
Bottom line: If someone really wants to vandalize your sign, there’s an extremely good chance that they will succeed in their efforts. If you’re installing your signage on public or private property that you don’t own, the only real thing that you can do to protect it is to drive by every so often to check up on it.

Cleaning and Storage

Once it’s time to take down the sign, gently remove it from the metal stakes and then pull the stakes up from the ground. Avoid using too much pressure when removing the stakes, as you could inadvertently bend them.  If the sign has accumulated dirt or grime, take a damp cloth and gently wipe it down. Store the sign in a dry area that’s free from humidity. If you take care of your paper or cardboard sign, it should last for a long time. However, if you need something a bit more durable and sturdy, then consider Coroplast—a cost-effective, lightweight, colorfast, corrugated plastic. Snow-proof, water-proof, and corrosion-resistant—Coroplast can stand up to almost anything mother nature throws at it. You can also get your yard sign made out of Translucent Coroplast, which catches and reflects light. If you add a backlight, it will also provide an eye-catching glow.
