Developing a Content Strategy (6 Tips) - Online Marketing 101

If you're like most of us you're probably thinking "Content...ugh!" And the truth is that coming up with a good content strategy can be hard.  What should I write about? What do my customers care about? Do I have enough to say?  These are all questions that first time marketers deal with.  To save you some time here are 6 tips to help you begin to generate a content marketing strategy.
  1. What are your customers FAQ's?
  2. What questions are your sales team bombarded with?
  3. What search terms are people using to land on your website?
  4. Question your customer base as to what their problems are specific to your industry.
  5. Use search engine tools like SEMrush.com to find out what search terms your competitors are focusing on and create new content around those areas.
  6. Search existing content within your organization that can be repurposed. **This can be a great time saver and launching point.   Look for manuals and how-to's from all departments within your company and see what you can and can't use.
By focusing on one or all of these areas you should be able to get your content marketing off of the ground.  For small businesses who don't have the time, it could be worth while to contact a marketing group who can build a strategy for you.  Or you could look for interns who have a marketing degree or writing background who want to get their feet wet.
