How to Quickly Build an Email List

Email marketing has one of the highest returns out of all marketing channels.  It’s inexpensive, easy to execute, and can drive sales and leads through the roof – if done correctly.

Many companies will fall into a sort of trap when they first attempt marketing via email. They will send out a few blasts to their email list, and that’s that. This usually results in no sales or leads, and they wind up giving up. They tend to view email marketing as the digital equivalent of throwing a message in a bottle into the ocean and hoping for the best.

It’s no wonder why many companies give up after not seeing good results.  What they don’t realize is that the reason nobody responded to their email blast isn’t that they sent it out on a Wednesday afternoon, but instead that their email list is garbage.

The results from your email marketing methods are only as good as the list you have. A poor list will be ineffective, no matter how good your email content or delivery methods are. Incentivize

Many people require a reason to give you their email address or opt into your email marketing campaigns. The main reason for this is due to the massive amounts of spam and marketing messages the average person gets on a daily basis.

By offering a coupon, discount, or other loss leaders, you’re giving people a reason to provide you with their email address. You can take advantage of this situation by sending out email blasts every so often with even more coupons and discounts. This way, you’re offering something of value which will prevent them from hitting the “unsubscribe” button.

Opt-in Boxes

You can’t get new email subscribers unless you give people a way to subscribe. A great way to do this is to simply ask. There should be a box towards the bottom of your website that will allow people to enter their email address for a newsletter subscription or other updates. These boxes can increase the opt-in rate by as much as 30%.

If you’d like to ensure the quality of the email addresses that are coming in, you can send out an initial welcome email that requires the person to click a button which will take them to a landing page on your website. The purpose of this is to ensure their email address is valid and good. This ensures that someone will read your email when it’s sent out.

Printed Marketing Collateral

Have you updated your printed marketing collateral with an email address, website, social media channels, or another way to join your marketing list?

For example, Southwest Airlines had napkins printed up that advertised special discounts for those who joined their email list. To join, all someone had to do was text their email address to a special phone number, and they would instantly start receiving promo emails.

Contests

Contests are a great way to quickly harvest email addresses. You can run one on your Facebook page, website, or via printed marketing collateral. Depending on the offer and how you market the contest, it’s not unreasonable to think that you could add 500 to 1,000 new email addresses or more to your marketing list.

Some companies or organizations are teaming up with other businesses. For example, two to three businesses that are similar, but not in direct competition with one another will come together and pool their email lists. They will usually announce a contest, and all businesses involved will have their emails sent out to the community list. This can exponentially increase reach ten-fold.
